In
1931, our mother, Natalie Vermilyea, first saw Carlsbad,
California. She traveled to California from Omaha with
her mother to visit the Rosecrucian Temple in nearby
Oceanside. There they heard of a great place to eat
called The Twin Inns in Carlsbad.
After
a fine chicken dinner, Natalie stood on the front steps
of the restaurant, a block from the ocean and, inhaling
the soft salty air, declared: "Some day I'm going
to live here"! It took her eleven long years to
fulfill her vow. In l942, Natalie and Veblen Vermilyea
moved to their new home, three blocks away from the
Twin Inns.
From
1942 to the end of their lives in the '90's, Veblen and
Natalie lived in what she called, "the heart of the
village." They raised eight children-- five girls
and three boys-- in this idyllic spot, and their children
claim to have had the best childhoods imaginable.
Fifteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren have
cherished their holiday visits to this oasis.
A
decade later, Natalie Vermilyea became the first city
employee of the newly-incorporated City of Carlsbad, and
upon her death in l995 the area newspapers (including
the San Diego Union) dubbed her "The First Lady of
Carlsbad." No one loved a city more than she loved
her adopted home.
When
our parents passed away, we kept our home and made it
into a haven for the weary. We converted the two houses
on the property to three comfortable, fully furnished
beach rentals. We invite you to share the experience of
The Heart of The Village, and perhaps to imagine what
it was like growing up here. Although there is more activity
now than in the sleepy '40's and '50's, the basic relaxing
elements of sun, sand, and sea remain. Just about everything
you need is within walking distance, so leave your car
in the carport and walk, swim, shop, eat, drink, antique,
or take the train (two blocks away) to San Diego and environs.
Or you can drive the short distance to La Costa Spa &
Resort to watch an International tennis match or a PGA
tournament, take the kids to Legoland, to the Del Mar
Racetrack, or to the other attractions that make this
area the primary tourist destination in the country.
We
love the comments of those who have stayed in The Heart
of the Village, and invariably they remark upon how lucky
we were to have grown up here.
